A multi-million-dollar waterfront park near San Diego International Airport and Point Loma officially opened today. The Naval Training Center Community Park was once military property. It was given to the City of San Diego in late 2001. KPBS reporter Nicole Lozare has more.
State-of-the-art military housing flanks one end of the park. The other side is San Diego Bay.
Soccer goal posts are up and a couple of kids are already kicking around a ball. Every few minutes, a plane taking off drowns out all the sounds.
The $4.3 million dollar park was paid for by bonds sold by the city.
Nearby resident Francesca Palumbo loves the park and plans on walking her dog Willie here at least three times a day.
Palumbo : You can't get any better than this. Waterfront property and just the feeling of the ocean, the bay breezes. It's just gorgeous.
Work is underway for phase two of the park. That part's budget is nearly $10 million.
