San Diego Development Plans Revised to Fight Global Warming

San Diego's planning department is revising the city's general plan to fight global warming. That blueprint for future development has come under fire. KPBS reporter Andrew Phelps has the story.

Attorney General Jerry Brown says San Diego's land-use planners aren't taking global warming seriously enough. The state already sued San Bernardino for ignoring global warming in that city's general plan.

Now San Diego city planners are paying attention. Jim Waring is the mayor's land-use planner. He says new revisions to this city's general plan promote public transportation, energy efficiency and sustainable building design.

Waring : This is where we should go. This is a moral issue. This is where we are going to go as a legal issue. And so the debate is about degrees, really. Maybe the speed and the level of the mandates.

Waring says other cities should share the responsibility to fight global warming. He says too many strict mandates could hurt San Diego's ability to attract business.
