A California based environmental group is taking legal action to get vinyl baby bibs off store shelves. The Oakland-based Center for Environmental Health found high levels of lead in bibs sold at Toys-R-Us, Babies-R-Us and Lisa Kline stores.
Researcher Caroline Cox says lead is sometimes used as a stabilizer in vinyl. She says three different kinds of bibs had unsafe levels of lead.
Cox : A blue kind of sports theme bib and a pink, flower-themed bib and a beige-colored, Disney-themed bib, Pooh and Piglet characters. And we found levels of lead that were between three and four times the legal limit for lead in paints.
Cox says the center is bringing legal action against the stores because they violated California's toxic materials law.
Proposition 65 requires stores to list hazardous compounds in items they sell. Cox says she hopes the retailers voluntarily remove the items. She says parents can use lead testing kits to see if any of their vinyl bibs have too much lead.
