There's no word yet if San Diego school district's former chief administrative officer will officially resign, but his contract indicates the district could sever its ties with the embattled leader at any time. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Jose Betancourt was replaced as chief administrative officer earlier this week. District officials say he's currently on leave but still on the district's payroll.
So far it's unclear whether Betancourt will come back or resign. However his contract says he can be fired with cause, at any moment, as long as he's given three months notice. That means the district would legally be obligated to offer Betancourt three months worth of pay. That's about $46,000.
District officials aren't saying how much money it would take to search for and hire a new chief administrative officer.
Last month, Betancourt pleaded guilty to federal conflict of interest charges. He admitted to violating a federally mandated one-year cooling-off period because he worked for a military contractor too soon after retiring from the Navy.
