California Senator Dianne Feinstein says the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales signals the beginning of real change. She has been critical of him since his appointment. Sara Sciammacco has more from Washington.
Senator Dianne Feinstein called Attorney General Gonzales's resignation a welcome gesture.
Feinstein : The fact that it did come candidly is somewhat overdue but nonetheless it's happened.
Feinstein and other Democrats put the pressure on Gonzales for months to step down. Controversy brewed primarily over his involvement in the firings of several U.S. attorneys -- including former San Diego Prosecutor Carol Lam.
Feinstein, who is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, says the change will improve morale within federal law enforcement agencies.
Feinstein : I think it is a positive step that has been taken. Now I hope we can get a new candidate before the Judiciary committee as soon as possible and get on with it.
Feinstein says she has suggested several nominees to the White House to replace Gonzales.
