The fire burning along the north shore of Lake Hodges has reached Del Dios, a densely wooded community of small houses and cottages between the lake and Del Dios Highway.
Fire crews in the area said it was too dangerous to allow a reporter into the area.
The fire had spread west from neighborhoods in south Escondido, many of them expensive homes with a view of the lake. Firefighters said nine homes burned at the end of Via Loma Vista.
Other homes apparently burned in the Quiet Hills and Lomas Serenas neighborhoods further east. The exact number and location was not immediately available.
