Students at an Escondido school are mourning the loss of a teacher who died in the wildfires last week. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Victoria Fox and her husband were overrun by the Witch Creek fire as it raced through their San Pasqual Valley community. They were found late last week in the rubble of their garage. Fox taught six grade at Rincon Middle School. Many of her 65 kids say she was like a mom to them.
School psychologist Kristen MacConnell says Fox shared a unique bond with her students.
MacConnell : A lot of students said when they heard the news, they didn't believe it was their teacher, is that really true? We have students, sort of across the board, with their feelings from intense grief, to disbelief, to not really knowing how to express their feelings.
Counselors are encouraging students to draw pictures and write letters and poems in her memory. Those mementos will be put in a small treasure box, which will be given to her family.
