As more cities and counties consider bans on the plastic shopping bag, the American Chemistry Council is countering with a renewed recycling effort. From Sacramento, Jenny O'Mara reports.
The Council, along with the state Department of Parks and Recreation , is launching an effort to place recycling bins on state and county beaches.
Council Vice President Sharon Kneiss says the industry is trying to improve its education efforts. She says the goal is to reduce plastic trash that ends up in the ocean.
Kneiss : And we're coupling that with information on what's recyclable and also with advertising.
But Mark Murray with Californians Against Waste says placing more bins on beaches will not make a difference. He says the real problem is the amount of trash out there-and the nature of the material.
Murray : Plastic is so lightweight -- it blows and it floats for hundreds of miles and it's permanent!
The signs and bins will start showing up on Southland beaches this month.
