Sixth Annual Celebration and Fundraiser

Friday December 7, The Media Arts Center San Diego presents the 6th anniversary Teen Producers Project Celebration and Scholarship Fundraiser. The event takes place at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego Downtown (1100 Kettner Blvd). The reception and silent auction begin at 5:30 p.m. and the presentation and screening begin at 6:45 p.m. Argenis Herrera will be receiving the Greg Muskewitz Scholarship Award (given in memory of the late San Diego film critic). So come out to support local youth and help raise money for the wonderful Teen Producer Project students and programs.

Greg Muskewitz Scholarship winner Argenis Herrera has worked with the Teen Producers Project since its inception six years ago. He's worked on many Teen Producers Project documentaries including El Padrecito del Barrio from the Voices of Change project this past year. Currently he is a Senior at San Diego High School and will graduate in June 2008. After graduation he intends to continue his studies at San Diego City College. He was selected to receive the scholarship this year as the longest-continuing Teen Producer student and for his hard work in both the program and at school.

After the presentation of the scholarship, the evening will continue with the premiere screening of two locally-produced Teen Producer Project documentaries from the past year. I Want My Parents Back is part of the ongoing City Stories project. In the film a group of San Diego teens explore the issue of immigration and the effects of recent ICE raids on the community and specifically, the Munoz family.

The A-G Requirements: Your Pathways to Californias Colleges and Universities will also screen. It is a collaborative project with San Diego County Office of Education (LRET Division) and Migrant Education (Region IX). In The A-G Requirements Teen Producers explain the requirements needed to continue education after high school by telling the story of a successful student, Stephanie Aguilar, and the sacrifices her family has made in order for her to pursue a higher education.

The event will also showcase student work, community partners, and video interviewees from other Teen Producers Projects produced throughout the past year, including Its Your Life, Live it Save made in association with the San Diego American Indian Health Center; Herminia Enrique Defendiendo Mi Cultura, Victor Ochoa Pintando la Communidad, and Roger Cazares Passion, Justice and Community , which are part of the Voice of Change project; and Girls Working for a Better Tomorrow , part of the Refugee Voices Project. I have frequently highlighted films from the Teen Producers Project in my Film School Confidential : A Showcase of San Diego and Tijuana Filmmakers, so I can attest to the quality and passion found in their work.
