Five-Year Projected Budget Shortfall For San Diego = $309 Million

The City of San Diego faces a budget shortfall of more than $30 million this year, and the mayor says it may only get worse. The story from KPBS reporter Alan Ray.

Less than a day after delivering his State of the City address, Mayor Jerry Sanders has released his projection for the City's fiscal health between now and 2013. Sanders projects a $32 million budget deficit for the coming fiscal year, and a deficit of more than $40 million next year.

The five-year projection is for a cumulative shortfall of $309 million.

Sanders says the deficit may have to be covered with more reductions in the city workforce.

670 city jobs have been permanently eliminated in the past two years to save money. The mayor would not offer specifics of what new positions might be cut, or how the cuts would affect city services.

He's asked each department to submit a budget proposal that includes a ten percent reduction, but he says not all departments will be required to make ten percent cuts.
