San Diego Unified to Consider a Barrio Logan High School

San Diego Unified school board members will consider a plan Tuesday that would establish the first high school in Barrio Logan. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

The high school would be operated by the King Chavez charter school group in Logan Heights. The group already manages five charter schools that serve low-income Latino students.

District officials question what kind of specific teaching strategies will be used for English learners at the new high school. Charter school official Tim Wolfe says it's all about the basics.

Wolfe : It starts with building a culture that's sensitive to the community and culture. We pay attention to the English language learner standards of the state. Thirdly, looking at our data very carefully and sorting out those kids who really need English language proficiency.

But district officials are also concerned the high school doesn't have its own way of measuring student progress.

Even so, parents say the campus is needed so students can stay in the community.
