A new private school dedicated only to teaching autistic kids is getting ready to open in Carlsbad. The campus will be the first of its kind in the country. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has the story.
The National Center for Autism Research and Education is a $10 million endeavor that will open in August. The school will offer kids individualized instruction and provide one-on-one counseling for the students and their families. A team of on-campus researchers will also offer families the latest information on autism.
The center's Keith Berglund says the campus fills a void for parents who are frustrated with the lack of support in public schools.
Berglund: That's one of the main things that is a draw for them. We are addressing the needs of the specific kids and their specific autism spectrum disorder over trying to classify them and put them in a place that really doesn't fit what their needs are.
Berglund says the school will enroll roughly 200 autistic kids ages eight to 22 years old. Tuition for one student is close to $50,000 a year.
