A beachfront bacteria zapper will make sure sewage treatment plant water is safe before release to the sea at Oceanside's Buccaneer Beach.

The ultraviolet water treatment bacteria zapper at Loma Alta Creek will kill fecal coliform bacteria and other nasty stuff from the La Salina Wastewater Treatment facility before it hits the ocean.

The $5 million ultraviolet treatment plant was paid for with a grant from the California Water Resources Control Board. High bacteria levels at the beach led to 16 closures in 2005.

The new bacteria zapper project is 65 percent complete and will be in operation in July.
