A judge heard closing arguments today in a case that pits the San Diego teachers union against the San Diego Unified School District. They're fighting over layoff notices that were sent to hundreds of teachers last month. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has the story.
Teachers who are appealing their layoff notices took the day off from school to attend the public court hearing.
Attorneys representing union teachers say the district issued more layoff notices than it really needed. They believe the district used faulty information when determining the layoff list. And they say the notices were not handed-out fairly.
But the school district's attorney Melanie Peterson says the district followed the rules. She says teachers with less than six years of experience got a notice.
Peterson: It’s really by seniority only. And the emphasis is that it has nothing to do with their ability as a teacher. We appreciate their service in the district. But the rule is the rule.
A judge is expected to make a decision next month.
