School kids at Torrey Pines Elementary in La Jolla huddled around a classroom table today to watch a doctor dissect a cow's eyeball. It was just one of many experiments that took place in honor of Science Discovery Day. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has the story.
More than 400 students took part in 40 different kind of science experiments all around campus. The school brought in doctors and scientists from around San Diego to conduct the experiments. They explored topics like sensory physiology, the physics of water and chemical interactions.
Fifth grader Emma Wineman says she learned a lot about genetics by experimenting with strawberries.
Wineman: I didn't know that strawberries had DNA. I thought only humans had DNA. So I thought that was really cool that we got to experiment. And I like science Discovery Day because we do stuff that we'd never think about doing.
The event is designed to get kids interested in math and science. Torrey Pines Elementary was recently named one of California's Distinguished Schools.
