California residents are worried about more than just the economy. They're also concerned about the state of the education system. That's the finding of the most recent poll by the Public Policy Institute of California .
PPIC President Mark Baldassare says 53 percent of the state's residents point to the quality of public schools as a major problem.
Baldassare: And they're concerned about what potential cuts might happen this year that might have a negative impact on schools.
But the poll showed a split among Californians' and their willingness to pay higher taxes to avoid cuts to education. Forty-nine percent of residents say they're willing to pay more while 48-percent say they're not.
The survey also shows Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's approval rating has slipped. 41 percent think he's doing a good job. That's down three points from March and down 16 points from December. Just one in four Californians -- or 26 percent -- approve of the way lawmakers are doing their job.
