Three Republicans and one Democrat are running to represent San Diego's Seventh District. Councilman Jim Maddafer, a Republican, is termed out. District 7 includes San Carlos, Rolando and the College Area. KPBS reporter Nicole Lozare has more on this race.
The two frontrunners in the race for District 7 couldn't be more opposite: On one side you have Marti Emerald, a former TV reporter.
Her opponent is April Boling -- a self-described "boring" accountant with a long resume of public service. Boling served on the city's Pension Reform Committee and the Blue Ribbon Committee on City Finances.
Boling: We're in a situation right now in the City of San Diego where the bulk of our problems are financial and until we get those ironed out, we are not going to be able to move forward as a city for the other things that we would like to do.
But in debates, Emerald has accused Boling of failing to speak out about the city's money problems while on the Blue Ribbon Committee. The former TV watchdog says she will use her investigative skills to clean up City Hall.
Emerald: We've got to be really smart and we've got to send a solid message to the rest of the world, to the financial communities, that we mean business.
At a recent debate in the College Area, residents voiced concerns about the increase of mini-dorms in their neighborhoods. They also complained about badly maintained streets.
The other candidates include police officer David Tos and middle school teacher Bill Daniel.
