Tom Fudge : On Monday, Mark Yudof took over as president of the University of California. He replaces Robert Dynes, who served for four years. Yudof comes to UC after having run the University of Texas, where he spent six years as chancellor. Prior to leading the University of Texas, Yudof was president of the University of Minnesota for five years. He's a law professor by trade, and aside from his hiatus in Minnesota he has spent most of his career in Austin, Texas working for the UT.
Yudof comes at a high price. He'll earn nearly $600,00 in base salary, and an additional $230,000 in other compensation. But the grades they gave him in Texas and Minnesota seem to indicate he's worth the money. He took over in Texas when the state was going through a financial crisis, not unlike the one we're seeing now in California. He has a record of improving campus infrastructure, diversifying University funding and making University operations highly transparent.
