Tom Fudge : The world is full of people, and the most common source of high-quality protein in the world is fish. Unlike every other staple of our diet, fish and other seafood are mostly harvested in the wild. But that's changing. In fact, it won't take long before most of the fish we eat will come from farms.
Fish farming has been going on for a long time. The Chinese have been doing it for many centuries. Today, fish farming is seen as a way to continue providing high-protein food to the world's people, while saving the wild fish population. But fish farming has also developed a bad reputation for environmental pollution. Some farmed seafood from China is considered dangerous to eat because of a high level of pollution in farm ponds.
Today, fish farming is not a common activity off the California coast. But that could change. San Diego-based Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute is involved in a project to test the viability and safety of fish farming off the coast.
