San Diego Unified School Superintendent Terry Grier is trying to hammer out a plan to keep more teachers on the district's payroll when school starts in September. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has the story.
About 900 teaching positions were originally on the chopping block in March. Seven-hundred of those jobs were spared last month after the Governor backed away from making deep cuts to education.
Now about 200 teaching jobs are at risk. But Grier recently announced he's working to keep at least half of them by using district money that's not tied to any one program. District officials say the superintendent could tap into about $7 million of district money.
The district's budget forecast has dramatically improved over the past several months. If all goes well in Sacramento, the majority of teachers at risk would be spared from layoffs.
Meanwhile, the district is also promising to bring back additional 200 district positions if lawmakers approve a final budget that gives the district more money. School principals would decide which jobs to restore at each school site.
