The chairman of the state republican party is from San Diego. He says Senator John McCain's presidential campaign is getting the attention of undecided and independent voters in California. But the state's most well known Repubilcan --Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger cancelled plans to speak today and remains on the sidelines. From Sacramento, Steve Shadley reports.
Ron Nehring of San Diego is leading California's delegation at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota this week.
Nehring says although McCain was trailing in public opinion polls earlier this summer…recent surveys show he's starting to close the gap on democratic nominee Barack Obama in California.
As the campaigns head into the final stretch, Nehring expects Governor Schwarzenegger will make appearances on behalf of McCain in California and in other states.
But…A few weeks ago, Schwarzenegger hinted he might cross party lines, announcing he'd consider accepting a White House cabinet post if Obama wins.
Schwarzenegger: I think what Governor Schwarzenegger was really saying that he's really interested in public service to the country as well as the state…and he's been a real leader on a variety of issues. I think the governor was stressing the fact that he really wants to continue serving the country and he wants to continue to do so after he leaves office…
Still, Nehring says he's confident Governor Schwarzenegger is soundly behind McCain's bid to be the next president.
Nehring says McCain considers California a key state in his campaign, and he'll be making a lot of appearances here before the election.
