Officials broke ground today on a new campus for Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego’s East Village.

The $68.5 million, eight-story building at 1155 Island Ave. is scheduled to open by the spring of 2011.

Its 177,000 square feet will include outdoor terraces, classrooms, offices, collaborative work areas and a two-floor law library.

Half of the building will be commercial space that’s open to the public, with a cafe, bookstore  and a legal clinic.

The Law School was able to raise the funding for the new construction before the financial downturn cut off credit.
