Michigan Parole Board to Hear Case of Fugitive Mom

The Michigan Parole Board will consider whether to release a California woman who was returned to prison 32 years after she escaped.

The Michigan Parole Board will consider whether to release a California woman who was returned to prison 32 years after she escaped.

Susan LeFevre's parole hearing Thursday will be conducted via video from her Ypsilanti prison to a parole panel in Lansing.

LeFevre had asked a Saginaw judge to toss her original 10-year sentence for selling heroin. The judge last month instead asked the parole board to consider the case.

LeFevre is a 54-year-old from the San Diego area who was living under a different name when she was captured last April. She escaped from a prison in suburban Detroit in 1976 after serving about 14 months.

The parole board probably won't make a decision until the end of January. Prosecutors want LeFevre to serve about 3½ years total.

A big decision awaits some voters this April as the race for San Diego County’s Supervisor District 1 seat heats up. Are you ready to vote? Check out the KPBS Voter Hub to learn about the candidates, the key issues the board is facing and how you can make your voice heard.
