Mayor Jerry Sanders says there are a lot of ways San Diego can use its share of the federal economic stimulus package. But the money needs to get here first. KPBS reporter Katie Orr has details.
The Mayor says the passage of the state budget should help federal stimulus money reach the city faster. He says before the budget agreement, he was worried the state might hang on to the federal money. Sanders says the sooner the money is funneled to the region, the sooner work can begin.
Sanders: We have a lot of shovel ready projects in infrastructure in water and waste water and freeway construction and highway construction that could start literally the second the money comes in. All we have to do is bid those out. But if it takes a long time to get that here, it’s going to slow down the jobs process.
Sanders says the passage of the budget also means the state won’t be taking more money from cities and counties like it had been considering. He says having a budget will help the state to get back on track.
