The San Diego Unified school board might backtrack on its promise not to send layoff notices to teachers. Tomorrow the panel will consider telling more than 250 workers they might lose their jobs. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
A district proposal shows elementary school teachers, nurses and counselors might get layoff notices.
If approved, the layoffs would go against promises made by San Diego's new school board majority. Trustees Shelia Jackson, John Evans and Richard Barrera vowed to protect teachers.
Teachers union president Camille Zombro says she's seeing a repeat of last year, when trustees sent more notices than needed.
“Their numbers were not reliable then, and they're not reliable now,” Zombro said. “As far as the disposition of the school board members, its disturbing. It’s utterly inconsistent with the messages that we've been hearing from the school board all year.”
San Diego Unified is one of the few districts in San Diego County county that has avoided layoffs. Instead school trustees offered veteran teachers a financial buyout plan for retiring early.
However, district officials say the layoffs might be needed if not enough teachers take an early retirement deal.
