Heavy Rain Expected Next Week

A hard rain is headed for San Diego, with the first wave of a nearly weeklong storm expected to arrive early Monday.

Stormy weather is expected through Thursday at least, and up to 4 inches of rain could fall in coastal areas and nearly twice that much could fall at higher elevations.

Intense downpours could trigger slides in wildfire-ravaged areas.

The weather system is being billed as the first generated in part by a moderate El Nino weather pattern, which is characterized by warmer-than-normal waters in the equatorial Pacific.

The weekend should be dry, but rain is expected by Monday, the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
