California Counties say more people are requesting vote by mail ballots this election – but they’re not turning them in very quickly.
Counties have already gotten requests for more than seven million absentee ballots this election. Gail Pellerin, head of the California Association of Clerks and Election Officials, said that’s more than in the 2008 Presidential election, which saw record turnout.
Pellerin said most absentee voters are registered permanent vote by mail, and counties really like that. “What that means is that we can really do a good job on planning and we can get those ballots out first thing and our requests then are more manageable for the few that are requesting for just that one election.”
Pellerin said despite the huge interest, so far fewer than one million vote by mail ballots have been sent back. She said they must be received by 8 p.m on Election Day, so she cautioned against putting them in the mail after Wednesday.
