The so-called Combat Fire is almost contained this morning, after burning roughly 450 acres on Camp Pendleton and injuring two base firefighters.
Camp Pendleton spokesman Cpl. Christopher Duncan said in a news release that one Camp Pendleton Fire Department firefighter suffered smoke inhalation while battling the blaze, while the other CPFD firefighter suffered burns. Both were treated for their injuries and released.
According to the CPFD Facebook page, the Combat Fire started Monday afternoon during training exercises:
[The] fire broke out just after 3pm [Monday] aboard Camp Pendleton in the Kilo 2 Training Area near a "Combat Town" training facility...
In addition to six Pendleton engines, one water tender, one quick attack, one paramedic ambulance, and multiple Chief Officers, the Incident Commander... requested multiple aircraft, engines, and hand crews from our regional mutual aid neighbors.
