SEAL BEACH, Calif. (AP) -- A temporarily closed section of one of Southern California's busiest freeways is expected to reopen early, after workers demolished a bridge.
State Transportation Department spokesman David Richardson says the southbound lanes of a four-mile strip of Interstate 405 in Orange County should be open by 2 p.m. Sunday.
That's several hours ahead of schedule.
He says the northbound side should be open no later than 3 p.m.
Extensive publicity before the construction work appears to have convinced most drivers to stay away.
The spokesman says only minor traffic delays were reported around detours earlier Sunday.
As many as 300,000 vehicles pass through the stretch of freeway on a typical weekend day.
The closed section of I-405 is near its junction with State Route 22 and Interstate 605.
