At Least 2 Dead, 2 Wounded In Nevada School Shooting

Two people are dead and two others are in critical condition after a shooting Monday morning at a middle school in Nevada.

Police said the four were shot when the shooter entered the grounds of Sparks Middle School, northeast of Reno, sometime after 7 a.m. local time.

The two wounded were described as boys, but it wasn't immediately clear whether they, or the two dead, were students at the school. It also wasn't clear if there were other casualties.

On its website, The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that two people, including the shooter, are dead. The Associated Press also reported two dead and two others wounded.

The AP reports that police in Washoe County School District said the school was "all clear" and that the suspect is "down" but offered no further details.

The news agency quotes Angela Rambo, a spokeswoman of Renown Regional Medical Center, as saying two boys are in critical condition.

Update at 2:15 p.m. ET. Suspected Shooter Was Student:

During a press conference, Mike Mieras, the chief of the Washoe County School District Police, said the suspected shooter was a Sparks Middle School student.

Sparks Mayor Geno Martini said the shooting was an isolated incident.

He said he was sorry that he had to be at the press conference talking about this, but "It's one of those things that happens."

Update At 1:20 p.m. ET. Official: Dead Are Shooter, Staff Member

In an email to NPR's Ted Robbins, Aaron Kenneston of the Washoe County Emergency Management agency confirms there are two dead -- the shooter and one staff member.

In the video below, from the Gazette-Journal's website, Kyle Nucum, 13, describes hearing shots, then seeing a teacher approach an armed "13- or 14-year-old" wearing a Sparks Middle School T-shirt.

"The student was pointing a gun at the teacher after the teacher told him to put it down. Then the student fired a shot at the teacher and the teacher fell and everyone ran away," Nucum says.

Update At 1 p.m. ET. Shooting Outside School Building

The AP, quoting police, says: "The shooting happened on the school's campus, but outside the school building itself."

The news agency says students at the middle school were evacuated to a nearby high school.

Update At 12:50 p.m. ET. Nevada Gov 'Deeply Saddened'

Gov. Brian Sandoval issued this statement:

"I was deeply saddened to learn of the horrific shooting at Sparks Middle School this morning. My administration is receiving regular updates and the Nevada Highway Patrol is assisting at the scene."
