Salvation Army Hosts Thanksgiving For San Diego County's Needy

Salvation Army Thanksgiving Meals Inspire Volunteers

Volunteers with the Salvation Army Wednesday served their first two of four Thanksgiving meals to San Diego County's needy.

In all, around 2,700 people are expected to be fed over the next two days.

Wednesday's meals took place at Corps community centers in Chula Vista, 648 Third Ave., and Escondido, 1301 Las Villas Way. Around 300 people were served at each location, helped by dozens of volunteers.

Salvation Army spokeswoman Rachael Fowler said a lot of the people who come for the sittings have nowhere else to go, and don't have family or enough money to buy a full holiday meal.

The dinner served Wednesday included turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls and pumpkin pie.

Thanksgiving meals are also set for Thursday in Oceanside and at Golden Hall in downtown San Diego, where around 1,800 people are expected to attend.

Also Wednesday, the nonprofit Mama's Kitchen distributed more than 3,000 pies in one of the organization's largest annual fundraisers.

As of midday Wednesday, more than 3,900 pies were sold overall, earning the organization more than $108,600. The total take is expected to go higher, because there are still a few pies available for purchase.
