The Hollywood Foreign Press (a non-profit organization whose members are international journalists based in Southern California) just announced its nominations for both film and television. No real surprises with “Up in the Air,” “Nine,” and “Avatar” among the leading contenders in the 67th Annual Golden Globes.
The Hollywood Foreign Press is made up of under a hundred members and their Golden Globes have been for decades the forerunner to the Oscars. The Broadcast Film Critics, although a much younger group, has been trying to steal some of that thunder by announcing their nominations and giving out their awards earlier. But this year there appears to be only minor differences between the nominations of the two groups. Mainstream Hollywood ("Avatar," "Nine," "The Blind Side") is the big winner with a few art house darlings ("Precious," "The Hurt Locker," "A Single Man") nabbing multiple nominations. The Golden Globes serve up more acting noms -- basically double -- because they have categories for Best Actor/Actress in both Drama and Comedy Musical.
So prepare for the onslaught of awards advertising as films try to cash in on their nominations in the run up to the awards shows.
