ANTIQUES ROADSHOW: Biloxi, Miss. - Hour 1

At ANTIQUES ROADSHOW in Biloxi, Mississippi, this guest arrives with an inherited sculpture he’s hoping to learn more about. Beautifully modeled after dancers from the Russian Ballet, the heirloom treasure is actually a 1928 Demeter Chiparus sculpture and a stunning example of the artist’s signature style. Entitled “Persian Dancers,” appraiser Kerry Shrives values the ivory and bronze figures at a substantial $100,000 to $150,000.

Part adventure, part history lesson, and part treasure hunt, ANTIQUES ROADSHOW is a 13-time Emmy® Award-nominee and PBS' most-watched ongoing series.

Mark L. Walberg hosts.

In Biloxi, Mississippi, host Mark L. Walberg joins appraiser David Rago for a look at the eccentric pottery of George Ohr, overlooked in his lifetime during the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, but now the celebrated centerpiece of Biloxi’s Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art.

Ordinary Jardinière or Genuine George Ohr?

Is the jardinière this guest brought to Biloxi just another hand-thrown pot or did famed local artist, George Ohr, have a hand in its making? Follow the story in this article by Josh Mellits.

Highlights include a circa 1950 Walter Anderson linocut; an 1899 “Buffalo Bill” poster; and a 1928 Art Deco, bronze sculpture of dancers from the Russian Ballet, created by Romanian artist Demeter Chiparus and valued at $100,000 to $150,000.
