Family, friends and fellow Tijuana police agents said goodbye to one of their own Monday. The Tijuana police sub-commander was ambushed in downtown Tijuana late last week. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.
Tijuana police agents shouted Sergio Acosta Molleda’s name in the final roll call outside central command. Just blocks away last week, gunmen ambushed Acosta, three other agents and two civilians in a mid-day attack. Acosta was seriously wounded and died Sunday. One other agent was also killed.
At the memorial, Municipal Police Chief Victor Zatarain says just putting on a uniform makes agents vulnerable. He says Municipal Police respond to all crimes and are being forced into situations they shouldn’t be. Some agents have been the targets of a rash of commando-style attacks in Tijuana following the arrest of alleged drug kingpin Javier Arellano Felix. Twenty-one police officers have been killed in Tijuana this year. Amy Isackson, KPBS News.
