Report Says Mexico One of World's Deadliest Countries for Journalists

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists annual report, Mexico is one of the world’s deadliest countries for reporters. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has the story.

The Committee to Protect Journalists report says that violence related to drug cartels and organized crime is what makes Mexico one of the most dangerous places for reporters.

Clarence Page is a columnist for the Chicago Tribune and a Committee member.

He says five reporters were murdered in Mexico last year. Since 2000, a total of 24 have been killed. Page says one third of the deaths were in reprisal for reporters' work.

Page: Just reporting on it, let alone investigating can get you killed. And that's the sort of attack against freedom of expression that our organization is trying to stop.

Mexico created a special prosecutor for crimes against journalists in 2006. However, there've been no convictions.

Committee members presented their report in Tijuana at the offices of the crusading weekly newspaper Zeta that's lost two reporters and a bodyguard in retaliation for reporting on organized crime.
