Right now, one of San Diego's most densely populated neighborhoods isn't connected to the trolley system, but plans are underway to change that. A local agency will consider the extension Friday.
The San Diego Association of Governments Transportation Committee will get an update on the effort to extend the San Diego Trolley line to UCSD and the area around the University Town Center mall.
Executive Director Gary Gallegos says SANDAG has been working with the federal government to identify possible routes. He says extending the line will provide easier access for UCSD students and employees.
"I think this builds on some of the success we've had at San Diego State University and the fact that that's given students and faculty and other members better and more access in the University. We're hoping the same will happen with UCSD," he said.
Gallegos says the transportation committee should make a route recommendation to the full SANDAG board in July. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2016.
