Sears Essentials stores in Carmel Mountain Ranch and Clairemont will be among those closed as part of a major restructuring effort, the retailer announced today.
Sears Holdings released a list of 79 stores nationwide that would be closed, including three in California. The other affected California store is in El Monte, east of Los Angeles.
The company announced Monday that 100-120 Sears and Kmart outlets would be shut down to generate millions in cash. The other stores targeted for closure were expected to be named "as they become available.''
Sears officials cited slow holiday sales and a poor market for big- ticket items. Despite offering popular brand names like Craftsman tools, Kenmore appliances and Lands End clothing, retail analysts have slammed the company for failing to update its stores in the face of stiff competition.
The affected stores in San Diego are at 12080 Carmel Mountain Road and 7655 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. The company did not say when the establishments would close.
Sears Holdings operates 16 Sears and Kmart stores in San Diego County.
