California Governor Jerry Brown's administration has now reached agreements with most of the state's public employee unions that include one unpaid day off each month for the next year.
The union representing the largest number of state workers, SEIU Local 1000, struck its deal over the weekend.
The governor had originally suggested shifting state employees to a four-day work-week. But SEIU President Yvonne Walker said workers would have faced challenges like adjusting child care and second jobs.
"Not having the amount of time necessary to really study the impacts and figure out how we could lessen them - right? - made it not something that was viable for us," said Walker.
Fifteen of the state's 21 bargaining units have agreed to the four-point-six percent pay cut.That $400 million dollars in savings to California's general fund is counted in the budget deal Democratic legislators reached last week with Governor Jerry Brown.
A vote on that deal is now scheduled for Wednesday morning.
