Grier Accepts Houston School District's Top Job

San Diego Unified School Superintendent Terry Grier formally accepted Houston's top public school job today.

Grier flew to Houston with his wife Nancy to accept the position at that district's school board meeting.

Houston's school board voted unanimously to offer him a formal contract. The Houston Chronicle reports that contract is worth $4000,000 a year including bonuses.

The news comes as San Diego Unified wraps up its first full week of classes in the new school year. San Diego Unified school trustees have been bracing for the final decision. The board met in a special closed door meeting this morning to talk about who might be the district's interim superintendent.

The school board's John de Beck says they're considering top level internal candidates for the position. The board is expected to name that person tomorrow.

The board is also likely to discuss how it will pick a permanent school leader, and whether the superintendent role might change.

Grier has been on the job for 18 months. San Diego Unified has had three different superintendent in the past four years.
