More non-teaching staff in San Diego city schools will be getting layoff notices. The added cuts means more than 1,100 non-teaching positions will be affected next year.
San Diego Board of Education members have voted to eliminate about 300 more non-teaching positions. The cuts will come from areas like transportation, food services, clerical support and para-educators.
The layoffs are part of about $115 million in cuts to next year’s operating budget first brought to the board in March. Board President Richard Barrera reluctantly supported the measure.
“I’m going to need to vote for this tonight. And there is no doubt, no question that what we’re doing is eliminating services," he said. Let’s not pretend the work’s going to get done anyway and it’s hurting kids.”
Board members removed staff working in programs for pregnant and parenting teens from the list of positions slated to be cut. All told, district staff estimate about 15 percent of the district’s non-teaching positions will affected by budgeted cuts.
Depending on steps state legislators take to balance the remaining $15 billion gap in California's budget for the coming fiscal year, San Diego Unified could be forced to cut up to an additional $55 million from its own budget for the coming year.
