Students are celebrating the decision by the California State University Board of Trustees Tuesday to postpone action on a proposal to increase fees.
The proposal would increase fees on students who take more courses than they need to graduate, or more than their major requires. It would also charge students who repeat courses.
Trustees said they’ll do more research and review the proposal at a later date. Miles Nevin with the California State Student Association said he thinks the decision acknowledges students’ concerns.
“There’s also an observance that students and young people in general were pivotal in this recent election particularly in passing Prop 30 and one of the commitments from the CSU was to not raise additional fees if that passed, so I think it’s really the coupling of those two things,” explained Nevin.
California Governor Jerry Brown had also requested that Trustees delay its vote. And at Brown’s request the University of California Board of Regents has also postponed its vote on professional degree tuition increases.
