Things To Do Today
Many local museums and attractions have opened their doors for free today because of the wildfires, and many relief agencies are offering help. Here's a list of places to get help and things to do.
San Diego Unified Schools are closed today, leaving tends of thousands of families scrambling for day care. But in the case of this particular district it was not because schools were directly threatened.
“San Diego Unified has made the decision to practice an abundance of caution,” Superintendent Cindy Marten said, “(We wanted) to make all of our resources available to all of our brothers and sisters in North County, and hope that the entire San Diego County can work together to keep our students and families safe.”
Parents had some options, with some museums in Balboa Park offering free admission and special programs. Also, some YMCA and Boys & Girls Club facilities offered free child care.
Marten said that she wanted to make sure that areas that are directly threatened have whatever they need at their disposal.
“We want our schools to be available as evacuation centers, we have huge transportation resources, food services resources.
We’re making ourselves completely available to other county schools superintendents and relief workers, people who need support. We want to make sure that we’re available,” she said.
There was briefly some confusion Wednesday when automated calls went out to tell parents that school would be open despite the heat, even as SDUSD announced that it was closing all schools due to the fires.
