Firefighters today hoped to fully contain a brush fire that erupted yesterday and blackened more than 100 open acres in a hilly section of Camp Pendleton.
The blaze ignited shortly before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday off Vandegrift Road and 17 Street, in the southeastern reaches of the USMC installation, said Staff Sgt. Jesse Lora, a spokesman for the base.
As military and civilian ground and airborne crews began working to halt the spread of the flames, authorities cleared everyone out of office buildings near the burn area and shut down several stretches of road on the base.
However, evacuation orders and street closures were later lifted as the blaze moved away from the structures.
As of 8 p.m. Tuesday, the fire was 60 percent contained and had burned about 102 acres, a Cal Fire dispatcher said.
The fire was expected to be considered 100 percent contained and controlled by midday today, according to Camp Pendleton's public affairs office.
No structural damage or injuries were reported. The cause was under investigation.
