San Diego Is Eighth Greenest City, Magazine Says

San Diego is the eighth greenest city in the United States, according to a list released today by Travel and Leisure Magazine.

San Diego was the highest ranked municipality in California, besting San Francisco by one spot in a list that took cleanliness, pedestrian-friendliness, public transit and public parks into account.

The magazine cited San Diego's access to beaches, Car2Go electric vehicle rental program and -- countywide -- the highest number of farms per-capita in the U.S.

"Every San Diegan knows our city has been blessed with a natural beauty unlike anywhere else in the country, and we've been proud to work with our local innovators to keep our environment clean and green,'' said Mayor Jerry Sanders. "I'm happy to invite anyone looking for an eco-friendly destination to pay us a visit.''

Portland, Ore., the home of 288 parks, was ranked first.
