Environment America found residential and utility-scale projects in San Diego produced 107 megawatts of electricity last year. That is enough power to keep the lights on in about 100,000 homes for a year.

San Diego ranked just behind Los Angeles and just ahead of Phoenix and San Jose. San Francisco was the other California city to make the top ten.

Michelle Kinman, Clean Energy Advocate for Environment California, is not surprised California cities did so well.

"State leaders do a good job of implementing the state's solar rebate program," Kinman said. "But then it's also about making sure that things like the zoning and building codes are friendly to solar development."

The solar power industry generated 142,000 jobs last year, according to the report. That was up 20 percent from the year before.
