A late-winter storm that blew into the San Diego area over the weekend brought more rain and snow Monday to the already wet and frosty region.

The National Weather Service advised mountain travelers to be prepared for potentially hazardous frigid conditions by carrying tire chains and extra food and clothing, and warned ocean mariners that isolated coastal thunderstorms were possible through early Tuesday morning.

Over a 12-hour period ending at 11 a.m., according to the weather service, the unsettled atmospheric system dropped 0.72 of an inch of precipitation in Deer Springs; 0.67 in Valley Center; 0.65 in Encinitas; 0.55 at Lake Cuyamaca; 0.52 in Carlsbad; 0.5 in Valley Center; 0.48 in Descanso; 0.44 in Escondido and the Los Coches Creek area; 0.37 in Pine Hills; 0.35 on Otay Mountain; 0.34 at Henshaw Dam; 0.3 in Alpine; 0.28 in Poway; 0.27 in Warner Springs; 0.26 in Tierra del Sol; 0.22 in Campo; 0.2 at Dulzura Summit and Lake Murray; 0.14 at Lindbergh Field; 0.12 in Mission Valley; 0.06 in Point Loma; 0.03 in Ocotillo Wells; and 0.01 in Borrego Springs.

As of Sunday night, eight inches of snow accumulation was reported on Palomar Mountain.

The precipitation was expected to continue through the afternoon before dwindling and petering out overnight, making way for clearing skies, forecasters said.
