A report from the Pew Hispanic Center finds more Latino children are living in poverty than any other ethnic group, Sept. 28, 2011.

A new report says more Hispanic children are living in poverty than any other ethnic group.

The Pew Hispanic Center tracked child poverty rates from 1976 to 2010, and found that last year was the first in which the single largest group of poor children was not white.

More than 6 million Hispanic children are living in poverty.

The center attributes the rapid growth to "growing numbers, high birth rates and declining economic fortunes." More than two-thirds of Hispanic kids in the United States are the children of immigrants. The research does not distinguish between legal and illegal immigrant families.

The 2010 U.S. Census found that Hispanics make up 16.3% of the U.S. population, but 23.1% of the country's children.
