A local philanthropic group is donating $400,000 to the neo-natal intensive care unit at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. It's the largest gift the unit has ever received.
UCSD's neo-natal intensive care unit provides round the clock care to premature infants and newborns with complications.
Babies in the unit often need special cardiac or respiratory monitoring. Some have to have surgery.
The local non-profit Nice Guys of San Diego is making the $400,000 donation. Nice Guys president Zach Zacharias says the gift should make a difference.
"You know, it's when they say you throw a stone in the water, and you're able to make an impact, and it just keeps rippling out and rippling out. Well, I think this rippling is going to last for an awfully long time," Zacharias says.
Hospital officials say they're thrilled with the gift. UCSD will use it to buy special incubator beds for the babies.
