Scripps Green gets the highest marks from San Diego patients in new hospital ratings issued by Consumer Reports. The grades are based on eight different measures of patient satisfaction.
The ratings are based on patient surveys collected by the federal government. Each hospital is rated in such areas as doctor communication, pain management, and the cleanliness of patient rooms.
In San Diego County, Scripps Green Hospital edged out La Jolla's Scripps Memorial for the top spot. Bringing up the rear are San Diego's Kaiser Hospital and National City's Paradise Valley.
All local hospitals got low marks in the categories of communication about new medicines, and discharge planning.
Consumer Reports says choosing a hospital with high overall ratings increases the chance that a patient will be satisfied. But the non-profit group concedes patients don't always have a choice, especially in emergencies.
