The state assembly will vote Wednesday on a measure that would ban the chemical Bisphenol A (BPA) from products designed for young children.
BPA is a chemical that's widely used in plastic food and beverage containers, and supporters of the measure say BPA may cause serious health problems.
The National Institutes of Health says it's concerned that BPA exposure may have harmful effects on the brain.
The bill would prohibit the use of BPA in baby bottles and other products for children under the age of three.
Elisa Odabashian is with the non-profit Consumers Union.
"Babies and young children are particularly vulnerable," Odabashian says. "They may metabolize BPA much more slowly than adults, so it'll stay in their bodies at higher concentrations."
The American Chemistry Council says numerous studies support the continued safe use of BPA.
The state senate has approved the ban.
